CIS made simple

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is how HMRC collects tax in construction. Here's how it works in plain English.

If you're a subcontractor

  1. 1Your contractor takes tax off your pay before you get it. Usually 20%, or 30% if you're not registered.
  2. 2That money goes to HMRC as an advance payment towards your tax bill.
  3. 3At the end of the tax year, your real tax is worked out. If too much was taken, you may be owed some back.

If you're a contractor

  1. 1You must register for CIS and check (verify) each subcontractor with HMRC.
  2. 2You take the right deduction off their pay and send it to HMRC.
  3. 3You file a CIS return every month, even if there's nothing to report, unless you've told HMRC you're inactive.

What we help with

  • CIS registration for subcontractors and contractors
  • Verifying subcontractors and monthly CIS returns
  • Checking whether you're owed a CIS tax refund
  • Applying for gross payment status, if you qualify
  • Claiming allowable expenses like tools, van and mileage

What to send us

  • Your UTR number and National Insurance number
  • CIS payment and deduction statements from each contractor
  • Any other income (PAYE P60s, rental income etc.)
  • Receipts or a list of work costs: tools, materials, van, fuel, phone, PPE
  • Bank statements for your business account

CIS refund explainer

Estimate only

A rough guide to how a CIS refund can come about. It is not a calculation of what you're owed and not tax advice.

CIS taken at 20%
£6,000
Rough income tax on profit
£2,486
Illustrative difference
£3,514

This is a simplified illustration for a sole trader using basic-rate figures. It ignores National Insurance, other income, student loans and many other factors. Your actual position could be very different. We'll check your figures properly and tell you whether you're owed a refund.

How it works

  1. 01

    Message us

WhatsApp, call or fill in the form. Tell us what you need.

  2. 02

    We sort your numbers

Send us your paperwork. We check it, do the returns and explain it plainly.

  3. 03

You get on with the job

We keep on top of deadlines, so you can stay on site.

A price built around your job

We don't do off-the-shelf packages, because no two clients need the same thing. Every quote is put together around you.

  1. 01

You pay for what you need

A sole trader who needs a tax return and a CIS refund check pays less than a contractor running monthly CIS returns, payroll and VAT. Simple as that.

  2. 02

    One fixed monthly fee

Once we've agreed the work, you pay the same fixed amount every month. You always know what's going out, and there are no surprise bills.

  3. 03

    Quoted before we start

We look at what you need, tell you exactly what it will cost, and you decide. Nothing starts until you're happy with the price.
